Meet “Bill” and “Sandy”…

I’ve been hesitant to blog these cuties… The last time I did that, we never saw the kittens again! 😦

But, it seems these guys are here to stay… So needless-to-say, the Boys are VERY excited! 🙂

You may be thinking, “Wow – I can’t believe they didn’t name them some kind of food-themed name…they actually picked NORMAL names for these kittens?”

LOL, Yes, since the boy & girl kitten were found in our good friends’ hay that is upstairs in the milking barn, both boys decided appropriate names would be after them: Bill & Sandy.

🙂

FINALLY – cows back out grazing!

For 44 days, we’ve had the cows in Mordor, where we’ve been feeding them hay since our pastures weren’t growing due to the drought.

Thankfully, the cows’ milk supply hasn’t dropped as much as we feared it might.  Plus, we sold some of the calves, so that gave us more milk as well.

What a blessing that we had a large harvest of first cutting hay – never dreamed we’d be feeding it so soon!

Yesterday, Mike was able to move the cows out of Mordor and into Prancing Pony.  Hooray!  This summer has really reminded me how much I love to see GREEN in the summer!

Garden pests…

Apparently during a drought, tomato worms also eat green peppers, hot peppers, and potato plants – grrrrrr!! Here’s a pic of a baby one Mike just found – he’s already had his last meal, lol! 🙂

And the second pic is what happens when a groundhog is dumb enough to enter a garden where 3 boys know how to take care of business!! 🙂

Goodbye to 4 calves…

This weekend we sold 4 of the calves: Bondini, Butternut, Macadamia, & Snickers.

It didn’t take long – within an hour of posting our ad on Craig’s list, Mike got a call from an interested family! They are fellow Christians who homeschooled their 3 boys & want to grow a small dairy herd with these calves. They already have one calf at home, and these 4 are the same age, which is exactly what they were looking for! They came back out on Saturday and took them to their new home. 🙂

Thank You, Lord, for leading this family to our ad. May these calves be a blessing to their family & farm. Help them to mature into strong dairy cows who produce many offspring and healthy milk as they age. Place a hedge of protection around this family, Lord… may Mr. Farmer be granted healing from his medical issues, strengthen his wife as she cares for him and others in her nursing career, and guide their 3 sons down the path You have already prepared for them. Amen

Abandoned kitten adopted today!

Yesterday, friends of ours rescued an abandoned kitten left under their bedroom window.  It is unknown what happened to the momma – but what was left was a VERY sad and hungry (not-to-menti0n ADORABLE) kitten.  They brought him here…

…and we took care of him yesterday through this morning.

The level of commitment necessary to nurse kittens this young is HUGE, and the thought was a bit daunting to all of us as we considered our overflowing plates right now.  But, his tiny cries were enough to melt our hearts to do our best to take care of him. 🙂

Then, this morning, some other friends of ours were over and FELL IN LOVE with him!  He is now a new addition to their very large family, lol! 🙂

What a blessing that You sent us help, Lord!  While we do not know how long this little guy will be around, what we DO know is that he will bring many moments of joy and laughter to this loving family.  We pray for patience, endurance, strength, and wisdom for this family as they do their best to take care of this kitten.  AMEN

6 calves for sale…

These 6 calves (5 heifers + 1 bull) are now available for sale:  heifer-Bondini heifer-Macadamia, bull-Romeo, heifer-Snickers, heifer-Peekaboo, and heifer-Butternut.  Click on their names, and you can read about when they were born. 🙂

We weren’t planning on selling any of our calves this year, but with the drought, and a very real possibility that our cows will be dropping in milk production much sooner as a result, it seems as though we should at least investigate the possibility of selling some….  Mike posted the ad this morning and we already have someone coming out tonight to see them!  🙂

They are fed 1-1/2 gallons of fresh, raw milk each/day.  They run in a large fenced in pasture with trees for shade, and we’ve also begun giving them some hay as well.  They have not been fed any grain.

THIS WOULD BE A PERFECT “MINI-HERD” FOR SOMEONE TO GROW THEIR OWN GRASS-BASED DAIRY WITH…  LIKE PERHAPS SOMEONE MOVING TO A NEW FARM IN MAINE, LIKE CHIOT’S RUN, LOL ??!! (wink, wink)  🙂
