Uno’s trip

Today was Uno’s turn to leave the barn & join her other 9 half-brothers & sisters in the barnyard at our house. She started out walking with Mike.

But when she decided to run full throttle, Mike gladly passed her off to Michael, lol…

And finally – running with no restrictions! (As long as you don’t count the woven wire fence she almost plowed into next to me, lol…) πŸ™‚

Power-washing barn clothes

Before I married Mike, I had NO IDEA what Carhartt’s even were, lol. Let alone the difference between overalls & coveralls! But now, they are a big part of our daily living – and I can’t imagine being without them… πŸ™‚

20130414-201923.jpg

Such useful outergarments – for trudging through briars, warmth in brutal winds and cold, and my favorite part – protection of regular clothes, underneath. πŸ™‚

And they last for YEARS! Oh, they get stained & ragged after a decade or so, but thankfully, that doesn’t ruin their functionality. Truly, a great investment if you work outside through all the seasons in our neck-of-the-woods. πŸ™‚

Normally, I just rotate throwing a pair into our washing machine at the end of our cold season, so they are ready for late fall. BUT, when your washing machine has died 😦 & you haven’t found a new/used one yet, the mind does start to wander as your already-dingy-basement piles up with more piles to wash…

How does that saying go? “Necessity is the mother of invention…” or something like that ?

Our power-washer actually worked really great as a “washing machine” & using our dilapidated picket fence as the backdrop, lol.

Mike sprayed the items wet…

20130414-172805.jpg

I spritzed on diluted lye soap…

20130414-173219.jpg

he power-rinsed them off…

20130414-173817.jpg

and the sunshine + wind dried them on our clothesline.

20130414-191822.jpg

I don’t think I’ll ever throw them in a washing machine again – they really don’t need to be “street-clothes clean” – it’s just nice to get the brunt of the dirt/mud off. πŸ™‚

Also worked good for cleaning our rain suits, a sleeping bag, some canvas bags, & a throw rug!

Childhood “alphabet code”

Met up with a friend from my past this week on Facebook, and was reminded of the alphabet code she & I made up in our elementary school days… It has been a joy to reminisce with her and catch up! πŸ™‚

I remember creating it with her…trying to use features from each letter, but just mixing the features up. We would write short stories in a notebook, trade them, decipher them, and even graded them, I think! Yep. Began rambling a LONG time ago! πŸ™‚

I’ve often thought about our “code” over the years, and at one point tried to impress my boys with it… (Which completely UNimpressed them – in fact, it was further proof that their mom was weird um, different, lol!)

There are two letters I can’t remember: Q and Z, but I don’t think that’s too bad considering that was 30 years ago or so! πŸ™‚

Perhaps there are other creative young minds who will have fun playing with our code…? πŸ™‚

Calves or puppy dogs?

Brought Cuke, Sahara, and SG-13 over to our barnyard (aka Green Dragon), on Saturday. (If you click on their names above, it should take you to the post from when each one was born.)

As we walk our calves with halters on, they always remind me of puppy dogs… Since we don’t have any pet dogs here, I suppose these cute guys ARE OUR puppy dogs, lol…

I really like seeing them in the sunshine…

Here’s Cuke:

And Sahara:

And SG-13…

It is always fun to watch the calves run “full throttle” for the first time…especially when they learn that woven wire fences aren’t doorways, lol! πŸ™‚

And then there were introductions…

The boys from last year are on one side of their fence, and the girls from last year are on another side. What a difference a year makes! Thought it was pretty cute to watch them get acquainted! πŸ™‚

Once our pastures start growing, we’ll be able to move the yearlings, and these newbies will get the whole area to ram around in. They’ve adjusted well to their new digs… πŸ™‚

I even think the yearlings still look puppy doggish, despite the fact they are bigger… Must be their curly/fluffy coats. πŸ™‚

Here’s Augie & Romeo. Click on their names & you can see pics from their birth day last year.

Evidence spring is coming…

What a beautiful weekend we just had! Thought I’d share some pics of spring bursting forward…

And Tangerine is swelling up, too… Her due date is the 29th.

We’ve begun our morning “calf-check” walks. A wonderful way to begin each day… πŸ™‚

Spring inside…

The anticipation of spring is one of my favorite times of the year. Thoughts of vibrant colors & new life are right around the corner. πŸ™‚

It makes two of my least favorite chores enjoyable: hand-washing delicates, and ironing…time-consuming tasks that are tedious & slow moving. But this act of tenderly washing delicate craftmanship & smoothing out its wrinkles, parallels my walk with Jesus. And I love reflecting on this while I prepare for the new season, the new births, the new outdoor activities… Jesus has tenderly washed me of my sins, and straightens out the wrinkles of my life more and more each day. Fits so perfectly with preparing to celebrate His Resurrection in just a few weeks! πŸ™‚

Thought I’d share some pics of what the transformation of spring looks like inside our home. πŸ™‚

Marbles? Yes, marbles, lol… Love that they are old & colorful – and um, hidden meaning here… On those hard days when I feel overwhelmed and like I’m “losing my marbles” – this visual reminder will help me stop & LOOK UP to where my Hope comes from. πŸ™‚

Little boys and former little boys…

20130305-071119.jpg

It’s a beautiful thing to witness one generation teaching the ones behind them… πŸ™‚

Lord, may we all recognize teachable moments in our daily walks…opportunities to show Love, feel Love, speak Love, and receive Love. Thank You for reminding me that not all learning happens at a desk or from a book – and that Your work is done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Continue to prepare me for Your lesson-plan and may I always remember that You are THE TEACHER. I love being Your willing assistant! AMEN

Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth. (Deuteronomy 11:18-21 NIV)

Hanky pincushions

Last year, I was gifted a box of my Grandma Cegelka’s hankies.Β  I don’t know if she used them all or not, but I do know she kept them in her “special” box, so that makes them special to me. πŸ™‚

She’s been gone several years now, but her memory lives on.Β  Sure wish I would have asked her more questions when I had the opportunity.

I wanted to create some kind of keepsake gift with Grandma’s hankies.Β  For the hankies with simple edges, I found this idea online. Was a fun way to use up some old buttons I had laying around. πŸ™‚ Β Β  I welcome any other ideas to try, as well…especially some kind of Christmas ornament… πŸ™‚

Some of the other ones have crocheted edges, which are some of my favorites.Β  I also have some of her crocheted doilies and some linen doilies that she or someone in her family embroidered.Β  Funny, I would never really call myself a “girlie girl”, but there’s just something about these old treasures that speak beauty to me… Perhaps a future post of some of their pics will be forthcoming. πŸ™‚

Lord willing, someday I’d love to create window treatments and/or a quilt using some of my favorite hankies & doilies.Β πŸ™‚
