6th calf 2016

Banana had her second calf for us this morning. It’s a girl!!! {Click here to read about her calf last year.} Michael named her Harriet.โค๏ธ (Her dad’s name is Harry, lol…)

Michael got a halter on Banana, too, so he was able to lead her out of Mordor a little easier than it would have been otherwise. (She’s kinda stubborn, but she cooperates pretty well for Michael.๐Ÿ˜‰) Harriet followed well and made it the whole way down.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Today is a little bittersweet. Banana has been special to Michael, and he’s spent a lot of time showering her with extra attention over the past 4 years. He really wanted her to make the cut and remain one of our dairy girls, but that’s just not gonna happen. Last year, her rumen stopped working and we needed the emergency vet out to help her. Her appetite recovered, but we couldn’t use her milk for our dairy, and we actually dried her up in July. We decided to give her another chance for 2016, but it appears she is the same… Rats.๐Ÿ˜• Culling a cow from your herd that you are emotionally attached to can be hard, and I’m grateful for the time we’ve all had to prepare for this possibility. It’s just how farming goes sometimes. We are thankful for everything she has taught us, the wonderful memories of watching Michael take care of her, and for the two calves she’s had for us.โค๏ธ

Lord, use this experience to grow each one of us closer to You… Amen๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

4th calf 2016

What a beautiful morning here!โ˜€๏ธ

Mike and I started the morning out blazing a trail through the briars to get to our cross. It was a beautiful morning of prayer together on this Resurrection Sunday.โค๏ธ

Next, we headed over to check on the girls, and spotted some extra little legs…

PeaPod had a girl! We named her: Hope.โค๏ธโœ {Click here to read PeaPod’s post from last year.}

I had forgotten that we’ve had calves on Easter before… If you’d like to read about them, click here and here and here.

They walked over to the hay we brought.

And then we prepared for the walk down to the barn.

These two weren’t as smooth as the last three sets were. Ended up giving Hope a ride down the rest of the way while her mama sauntered down at her own pace.๐Ÿฎ

Used some hay bales to close up a temporary pen for Hope…

…and then she promptly did a jailbreak right through it, lol!๐Ÿ™„ So Mike had to take a few extra minutes to build something a little more durable.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

And then reinforced it with the bales…

Couldn’t resist sharing this pic of Blake introducing himself to Hope.๐Ÿ˜

We weren’t able to make it to our church service this morning, so the four of us headed back up to the cross together. Paul picked us some daffodils, and off we went. Mike read Luke 24, and we shared/prayed together. It was nice to kinda reenact the Easter sunrise service we used to have…โœ

Tally now is 3 girls, 1 boy.๐Ÿ˜Ž

Thank You, Lord, for HOPE!โค๏ธ

1st calf 2016

It’s that time of year again: babies and baseball, lol.๐Ÿฎโšพ๏ธ
This morning OreoCookie started our milking season out with a beautiful heifer calf. {Click here to see her calf from last year.} Here is the pic Mike txted me after he entered the field this morning:

The boys have named her Barbara.

[This year there is no theme – they just want to name them as they come. Apparently “Barbara” comes from a character from the 1970 movie: Kelly’s Heroes. They will be calling her Babra (which I guess only makes sense if you’ve seen the movie.) Whatever.๐Ÿ™„ I just want her to have a name…๐Ÿ˜‰]

Boys and I got the gates ready, found the halter, and up we all headed to bring them down to the barn.

This pic is kinda cool. The heifer closest to me is actually Barbara’s big sister: Coco. {click here to see the post when she was born in 2014}

Cookie knew the routine and led Barbara all the way down to the barn. It was a great way to start this calving season!

Mama and calf parted at the barn.

And with that, our 2016 calves have officially begun to arrive. Lord willing, 9 more should be here over the next 8 weeks.โค๏ธ

Lord, thank You for today’s calf. She is beautiful, and we are grateful. We lift up the rest of the mamas as they prepare to have their calves. Grant us the wisdom we need to assess each case, and prepare our hands to help when needed. May we honor You in all we do. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

9th (and final) calf 2015

Got home at dusk last evening from a baseball game, and noticed a small speck in the field… Yep – our last calf had finally arrived!! We headed across the field to see if it was a boy or a girl…

{SIDE NOTE: This picture warms my heart. Paul is walking in front of me. He looks just like my Dad with his hands in his back pockets like that…โค๏ธ}

We had moved Disco to this field by herself so there wouldn’t be as much chaos as the other day.

It’s a boy! His name is Luke… And he got to have a nice and quiet night with his mama.๐Ÿ‘

This morning, Disco brought Luke right to us, and he had a pretty uneventful walk to the barn.๐Ÿ˜Š

Ahsoka was serenading Luke’s arrival, and he was less than impressed, lol…๐Ÿ˜

So there we are – all done with calving for 2015! Final tally is 3 girls and 6 boys.๐Ÿ‘

Thank You, Lord, for all the new life here on this farm…โค๏ธ

1st calf 2015

Here we go! Last night, Paul’s heifer (Fiskars) had her first calf, making it also our first calf of the 2015 season.๐Ÿ‘ {Click here to see the post when Fiskars was born.

And here are a couple other posts featuring Fiskars from the past couple years: https://robertsfarm2004.wordpress.com/2012/07/20/paul-fiskars/

https://robertsfarm2004.wordpress.com/2012/11/14/banana-fiskars-showing-off-their-winter-coats/

So back to last night… It’s a boy! Paul named him “Chewy” (think Star Wars ๐Ÿ˜‰). The boys were at youth group while Chewy was born, but Mike and I were blessed with being able to witness his birth. Mike even helped a little…

He’s a cutie! Now the next test – will Fiskars get him cleaned up and fed?๐Ÿ˜ณ

Yep!๐Ÿ‘ So Paul decided to allow Chewy to stay overnight with his mama in the big field, and we would bring them down to the milking barn in the morning. (Gotta say, the control-freak in me wanted to just snag him up, bring him down to the barn, and feed him thawed colostrum since it was supposed to be 18ยฐ last night… But – we told Paul we’d honor his decision. We prayed about it together, and were excited for the adventure in the morning.โค๏ธ

It was such a beautiful evening to begin our 2015 calving season…

Mike & Paul headed up to the field first thing to check out the situation. Here’s what they found…๐Ÿ˜Š

“Operation distract” started first. Mike fed hay to the rest of the girls to keep them from getting in the way of our parade. It was a success.๐Ÿ‘

Next step was to bring Chewy & Fiskars down to the barn. Chewy was THE most laid back and calm calf we have ever had, lol. His tummy was full and he had ZERO ambition to walk ANYWHERE… By the time the 4 of us were ready to bring them down, Fiskars had stashed Chewy in the briar patch. That was fun getting him out, lol…๐Ÿ˜

Now it’s Paul’s turn to carry his calf…๐Ÿ˜‰

Fiskars contemplated participating in Operation Distract, but thankfully without too much prompting, she followed her baby through the gate and down to the barn.๐Ÿ‘

Fiskars did a great job milking for her first time!๐Ÿ‘

Cats were super excited for milking to start back up, too!๐Ÿ˜œ

Thank You, Lord, for new life. And for allowing us to witness just a small snippet of Your amazing creation. Prepare us to handle whatever lies before us as we begin this milking season. Amenโค๏ธ

Scripture pictures and frames

Over the past few years, we have played with adding Scripture to pictures we’ve taken as we “walk”.ย  Here is a post about the frames we made from our old pickets as 2014 Christmas gifts, and a link to a new page on this blog that will house the pictures. ๐Ÿ™‚

IMG_0297IMG_2810IMG_2651You’ll notice we had to change the location of the white note – not a good idea to cover up the hole where the dowel rod should go, lol! ๐Ÿ™‚

IMG_2655

Since I didn’t have enough pockets for each frame, some got envelopes instead. ๐Ÿ™‚

18 years together

Had to start milking extra early today so we could make it out in time for Michael’s double header. โšพ๏ธ

I will never grow tired of sunrises… โค๏ธ

I LOVE THIS MAN. โค๏ธ I love that he sees beauty where I see beauty. I love that I just caught him taking a picture of it like I was. ๐Ÿ˜ I love that the Lord has blessed us with 18 years of marriage together. ๐Ÿ’

Scraping marrow into beef broth – a new level of weirdness

Used up our last quart of broth last week, so its time to simmer another 4 roasters of broth. As I was straining the first two batches of broth on Monday, the strangest thing happened. All the bone marrow was STARING at me! I know, I know. I’ve seen it before, and I acknowledged it, but that was it. “Too weird. Not ready for that yet.” (I distinctly remember thinking that and even saying that to several people when it came up in conversations.)

And then it happened. Guilt. “Those articles (like this one and this one) you read a couple weeks ago DID make sense… And look at the marrow sticking out of those bones…” ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, I did it. I took a narrow knife and scraped out the marrow. Whisked it [now I blend it in my blender with a cup or so of extra broth], poured it back into the broth, and whisked it in… Funny thing is, I KNOW bits of marrow have fallen in it every time I’ve made broth. But (for me) there’s just something about taking the effort to actually do it on purpose, lol… ๐Ÿ˜

I feel like that’s what happens in my walk with the Lord, too. I can be sooo stubborn. I get into my “autopilot” mode and completely miss the open door in front of me. Or worse, I see the open door, but choose to do what I’ve always done, and miss an opportunity to grow. The cool thing, though, is that EVENTUALLY, I catch on. Autopilot goes off, and I quit fighting change. It’s always hard to see just how much pride I still have in “my way”, but it’s so freeing to finally “see it”, seek forgiveness, and continue forward with a renewed spirit to let the Lord keep me off of autopilot. Thank You, Lord, for being patient with me. Keep making me more like You!โค๏ธ

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. (โ€ญPsalmsโ€ฌ โ€ญ139โ€ฌ:โ€ญ23-24โ€ฌ NLT)

WELCOME 8th calf – 2014

FINALLY! Got to meet our last calf of the season this morning… Here is Suezy, and her son, JamesMadison:

20140513-144123.jpg

Click here to read about her calf last year.

Click here to read about our method for naming bulls this year.

His birth tied up the tally for 2014: 4 bulls and 4 heifers. ๐Ÿ™‚

He walked down to the barnyard like a champ. Had to dodge some pretty big puddles and his mama ran him into the electric fence a couple times, but he was able to complete the journey… ๐Ÿ™‚

Was so funny watching last year’s calves follow along the fenceline! ๐Ÿ™‚

20140513-144642.jpg

20140513-144819.jpg

The end is near – almost there… ๐Ÿ™‚

20140513-144936.jpg

Made it! ๐Ÿ™‚

20140513-145052.jpg

A well-deserved rest… ๐Ÿ™‚

20140513-145159.jpg

Since we are done milking for today, JamesMadison will stay with his mama until tomorrow morning. With there being a little over 5 weeks between him and the last calf, it creates some challenges with our type of setup.

For instance, the first seven calves are already trained & adjusted to once-a-day feedings, but this little guy won’t be ready for that for a couple weeks… Makes it tricky for afternoon baseball and far-away double headers…

And we need his mama’s milk to help feed all the other calves, so she needs to be able to come into the barn for morning milking… But our barn setup isn’t the best for having a calf running loose in it, nor do we feel comfortable having a calf joining the dairy mamas in a single-wire electric fence as they are rotationally grazed…

So every year we think about experimenting with a “nurse cow” in the field with all the calves, but that isn’t as easy as it sounds either! Hmmmm – not sure what we’ll decide on, so I guess that’ll have to be a future post! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank You, Lord, for all these beautiful, healthy calves!
